Drawing on the genre of the still life, ‘Nothing is Imperfect’ references the unachievable and unrealistic standards to which women are subjected–the missing stone is there to remind us all that perfection is an unobtainable myth. Xu Yang is deeply influenced by 18th century Rococo and its dichotomies–at once deeply restrictive towards women and yet, at the same time, luxuriantly fashionable in excess. Drawing on drag performance which she discovered here in London, silicone breasts, corseted hip pads, wigs and make-up often appear as magnifications of the feminine in her work.
