Asger Harbou Gjerdevik (b. 1986 Denmark) received his MFA in Painting from Royal College of Art and a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Gjerdevik works in an expressive tradition with painting, drawing, and sculpture. His paintings can appear wild and expressive, yet there is a surprising harmonic composition present throughout rendered by a steady hand. Amongst the most talented painters of his generation, Gjerdevik is fascinated by the meetings, collisions and oppositions between elements, scenes and materials. He works from an investigative approach to various inspirations and ideas and explores possible new stories through a sampling and compilation of different materials and motifs that resemble the structure of a collage. 


Gjerdevik works in various media such as painting, sculpture, collage, and drawing. With inspiration from everyday surroundings, movies, music, art history, and architecture, he examines human life in compositions filled with iconic symbols and graphic elements. Often the results are both complex and boundless pictorial spaces or structures, with the potential for perpetual change and differing stories. His compositions contain both figurative and abstract figures and quotes, just as he sometimes incorporates found three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional collage elements. The paintings are created in a process that involves continuous additions of materials, interposed references, transformations, and overlays. Often the results are both complex and boundless offering pictorial spaces or structures with potential for eternal change and new stories. Asger Harbou Gjerdevik’s works thus contain numerous levels of interactivity and pleasure to be experienced both visually and intellectually.
