Artissima 2024

OVAL Lingotto Fiere, 1 - 3 November 2024
Hall: Fuxia | Booth: 12
For Artissima 2024, Alma Pearl is pleased to present new and recent works by Cullinan Richards, Margarita Gluzberg and Jhonatan Pulido.

The duo Cullinan Richards draw from Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère for their mise-en-scène at the booth. Loosely referencing the 1882 painting are objects often displayed as part of the artists’ installations. Here, mirrors, one of the artists’ ‘table paintings’ and Campari bottles will set the stage. The event is in two parts: one in which the artists are present behind the bar, the other in which they are physically absent. The social and feminist practice expressed in Cullinan Richards’ work engages here with notions around the inclusion in the work of the observer, representation, doubling, and the hierarchies of gender.

As a means to negotiate the vicissitudes of the past, Margarita Gluzberg creates an abstract visual lexicon imbued with references ranging from desire, beauty, and loss. In Pencil Factory (Krasin), 2024, Gluzberg deployed an entire set of colour pencils produced by Krasin, a soviet pencil factory founded in 1926. There is a performative, durational and archival drive to this work; a need to formalise the product of a reality now long gone.

Jhonatan Pulido’s series of Puertas (doors) further develops his research into Colombian architecture and the relationship of this with the very act of painting for the rural population in the aftermath of the Colombian civil war. His work, residing in the liminal space between abstraction and representation, reflects on themes of scarring and reparation. These materialise as markings on painterly support comprised of cut out pieces of canvas attached together. The underlying layers of colour are handled and emerge akin to that of the scared healing of a wound.
