Margarita Gluzberg on Vortic Art
Traversing notions of nostalgia, consumerism, and desire, this new series of drawings is produced using Soviet-era pencils sourced from defunct factories. Operating on a matrix of citation and metaphors which escape the literal to instead be embodied in the materials used, the pencils here are manifest and consumed in a circular rhythm of creation and erasure. The medium becomes both a conduit and vehicle to connect to a drive towards a reorientation of the self through re-assembled fragments of the past. The newly found and resurrected pencils complete their lifecycle as they are worn down to create each work—consumed in the very act of preservation.
